3rd Grade English/Language Arts: $375 per year + $25 copy/materials fee

The 3rd Grade English/Language Arts class is designed to give children a strong foundation in reading, spelling, writing and grammar structure. With the Shurley Grammar curriculum students’ learn foundational grammar skills as they learn how to identify and apply different parts of speech. In 3rd grade, students are introduced to the Excellence in Writing program (IEW), which builds exceptional writing skills through focusing on both the style and structure of writing. Throughout the year, students will work on various writing pieces through the writing process as they practice organizing, drafting, editing and revising, and finalizing their writing assignments. Their writing will focus on specific areas from the IEW curriculum in order to help them become more developed and expressive writers. Grade appropriate spelling words and tests are given weekly and can be easily catered to each individual student’s needs. Additionally, the students will explore various genres of literature including fiction, nonfiction, historical, biographies, folk tales/fantasy and poetry. Through the different literature pieces offered students will build comprehension, fluency, real word connections, as well as other strategies to help better develop comprehension and response to text. At the completion of each literary work students will have a chance to display their knowledge through a literature project.
