8th Fundamentals of Speech - $375 per year + $25 copy/materials fee

Writing and speech skills are primarily learned through consistency, structure and practice. In this course, 8th grade students will have the opportunity to enrich these three skills. The focus of this class is to build strong grammar and writing skills necessary for success in high school and beyond. Through weekly in-class and at home grammar skill practice, students will build solid grammar and vocabulary abilities. This class will focus on the structure of writing by focusing on writing genres utilizing the 5 to 7 paragraph essay writing model beginning with expository and working up through descriptive, persuasive and narrative writing. The 8th grade class will also complete two research papers using the skills gained during the year. Lastly, with a blend of the Lost Tools of Writing and IEW Level C and Elegant Essay programs, students will review formats such as the KWO, the Story Sequence Chart, ANI chart and more. Students will be assigned 5 to 6 literature books to complete for the year and end of quarter assignments will be centered around the assigned literature books.

School Work Expectations: Students will complete a writing assignment (5 to 7 paragraphs) every 1 to 2 weeks during the school year. Students will be assigned one literature book a quarter. We will use this book in logical conversations ending with an end of quarter project focused on the literature book.

Parent Teacher Expectations: Parent teachers are expected to serve as editors to all student writing work. Prior to signing up, it is understood that parent teachers have thoroughly vetted the literature books to your home/lifestyle choices and beliefs. Parent teachers are also responsible for grading any tests and submitting grades to Mrs. Broadhurst before the due date.

Before beginning this course, students should have successfully completed a 7th grade ELA home or school based curriculum, have the ability to write complete sentences and follow directions.
