This course will expand the student’s understanding of the world through an exploration of the United States Government and Politics. Coursework will include foundations of the United States Government, the US Constitution, the three major branches of government, rights and liberties, and details of the political system at the national, state, and local levels. Comparisons will be made between the American Government and other political systems, and students will explore the role of government in current events and their own lives. Students will analyze three influential Supreme Court decisions to demonstrate the impact and importance of constitutional rights. Mastery of the material will be demonstrated through simulation activities of writing, deliberating, and passing a bill, campaigning for office, electing a government official, and hearing a case in a court of law. Additionally, there will be field trips to see the local and federal governments at work.
